Doctorate Medical Science The extra-occupational doctoral program Medical Science (Dr. scient. med.) promotes the understanding of methods and competences of a scientific, interdisciplinary coope- ration between clinical research and basic research, familiarizes students with methods and concepts of medical science and prepares them for a job in a research that is predominantly clinical, but also natural science and/or health science oriented. The program is aimed at people who have successfully completed their university studies in a relevant field and who wish to acquire or further develop research competence in the context of their current or future activities. Relevant to the subject matter are all comple- ted courses of study in which the curricula focus on imparting knowledge and skills relevant to medicine, nursing, health care or the natural sciences.
Requirements and admission Admission to the doctoral program is open to those who have successfully completed a degree (diploma, master‘s degree) from a recognized university or college in one of the following disciplines: • human medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, • pharmacy, • have a diploma or master´s degree in natural science, • have a diploma or master´s degree related to health science. In total, study achievements of at least five years or 300 ECTS credits must be proven. In special cases, the University Management may require the applicant to provide proof that he/she would be admitted to doctoral studies at his/her home university or at another recognized university in the home country. The decision on admission is made by the University Management and the Head of the Program based on the recommendations given by the Selection Committee. There is no entitlement to admission to the doctoral program. Duration and scope The duration of the doctoral program «Dr. scient. med.» is eight semesters and corre- sponds to 180 ECTS credits. Half of the courses take place online, every two weeks on Wednesday evenings. The other half of the courses is taught in five one-week blocks on site at the UFL in Triesen. We attach great importance to a regular attendance of the courses. For a successful completion of the course, attendance at at least 80 percent of the courses is mandatory. Please refer to the website for the dates of the courses. Tuition fee The tuition fee is CHF 27,750.00 (CHF 1,250.00 registration fee and CHF 26,500.00 in total for eight semesters). It will be invoiced independently for each semester: CHF 6,250.00 for semesters 1 – 4, CHF 375.00 for semesters 5 – 8.
Structure and modules The doctoral program requires of the completion and writing of an independent research paper as well as curricular components amounting to 38 ECTS credits (ECTS-KP). Every student is obliged to attend the doctoral colloquia. An exposé of the planned dissertation must be presen- ted in the first doctoral colloquium. The subsequent colloquia focus on content aspects.
