Christoph Gassner is a specialist in acquired and adaptive immunogenetics (HLA and non HLA immunogenetics) and an expert in human blood groups and their genetic basis (immunohematology).
Microbiologist and biochemist. Doctorate on epigenetics in bacteriophages at the Leopold Franzens University of Innsbruck (1994). Implementation of molecular HLA diagnostics at the Institute for Blood Transfusion and Immunology, Innsbruck Clinics. Development and commercialisation of genetic blood grouping (1994 to 1998). Post-doc at the FHCRC in Seattle (1999) and Basel Institute for Immunology (2000) on the immunogenetics of natural killer cells. Establishment of the Department of Molecular Blood Grouping at the Institute for Blood Transfusion and Immunology, Innsbruck Clinics (2001 to 2010). Habilitation on the genetics of the RhD system (2005). Head of the Department of Molecular Diagnostics and R&D of Blood Donation Zurich (2010 to 2019). Implementation of high-throughput blood group genotyping using MALDI-TOF MS and development of digital PCR for monitoring the success of bone marrow transplants.
More than 75 scientific articles with H-index 26 (2019). Since 2016 co-editor "Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy". Since 2018 Chairman of the International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT), Working Party on "Red Cell Immunogenetics and Blood Group Terminology".
